When I was installing my Dimage Elite II (on Windows XP) I had to first make sure the sliding 'front door' on the scanner was properly closed. Are there any such 'door' on your scanner? There is said to be a driver to make the Elite 5400II work in Windows 7: Maybe you will get it to work if you connect it to a Windows 7 computer? Or to another XP computer?

Or if you temporarily can get hold of another Minolta scanner and install that one on your XP computer. I believe they all use the same driver.
